Every Ingredient in Brown Body Reset, and Why I Chose Each One

From the Founder

Every Ingredient in Brown Body Reset, and Why I Chose Each One

Six months of research. A real sweet tooth. And one question that kept coming back: what does our body actually need?

In the spring of 2025, I left a weight loss program that had not worked for me. I had tried Ozempic. Then Wegovy. Then a clinical trial at my doctor's office using Zepbound. Over the course of nearly a year, I gained ten pounds while everyone around me was losing weight. The doctors kept raising my dose. Eventually they told me to leave the program. I was, in their words, hurting the data.

I wrote about that experience in the post about being removed from the GLP-1 trial. What I did not write about was what I did next. Because what came after the program was where the real work started.

I knew the mainstream system was not going to build something for my body. So I started researching the way you do when you have run out of the options someone else handed you: thoroughly, personally, and with a real stake in getting it right. Six months later, I had a formula. Here is everything that is in it, and the reason each ingredient earned its place.

Why Did I Start the Formula With Berberine?

Berberine was the first thing I landed on, and it became the foundation of Brown Body Reset. It is a plant compound with centuries of use in Ayurvedic, traditional Chinese, and Persian medicine. The barberry plant, which is one of the richest natural sources of berberine, has been used in Iranian cooking and healing for thousands of years. The clinical research on berberine is substantial: it works by activating an enzyme called AMPK, which regulates how your cells process glucose and fat. This is the same pathway targeted by metformin, the most commonly prescribed diabetes medication in the world.

For bodies like ours, this mechanism is not academic. South Asian bodies are more prone to insulin resistance at lower body weights than the populations that most metabolic research has been built around, meaning blood sugar dysregulation can occur well before a doctor flags anything on a standard lab report. The same gap shows up across our communities. Research consistently shows that Black women experience higher rates of cardiovascular risk that appear invisible on routine screening — metabolic syndrome going undetected because the diagnostic tools were not calibrated for it. Hispanic and Latina women carry roughly twice the risk of type 2 diabetes compared to non-Hispanic white women, with metabolic patterns that vary by heritage in ways mainstream health advice has largely ignored. Arab and Middle Eastern bodies are seeing some of the fastest-rising diabetes rates in the world, with visceral fat distributions that Western diagnostic standards consistently miss.

What all of these bodies have in common is not culture. It is that the research was not built for them, and the tools were not calibrated to catch what is actually happening. Berberine works directly on that underlying problem, the same insulin sensitivity mechanism that goes dysregulated across South Asian, Black, Latina, and Arab bodies, often years before anything flags on a standard lab report.

The AM capsule contains 500mg of Berberine HCl at greater than 97% purity. The PM capsule contains another 500mg. That split-dose structure is deliberate. Research shows that dividing berberine across morning and evening produces more consistent blood glucose regulation than a single large morning dose. The purity specification matters too. Most berberine supplements on the market are standardized at 95% or lower. The difference between 95% and 97% sounds small. In a supplement you take every day, the effects add up.

I started taking berberine in spring 2025, right after leaving the GLP-1 program. It was the first time in a long time that my body felt like it was responding to something in the right direction.

Why Is Gymnema Sylvestre in This Formula?

Let me tell you something about myself. I have a real sweet tooth. I grew up on Cadbury's chocolate. I still want a piece after dinner. That is not something I am trying to eliminate. What I wanted to change was the part where I could not stop.

Gymnema Sylvestre is called the "sugar destroyer" in Ayurvedic medicine, a tradition that understood it centuries before clinical research caught up. It has also been used in traditional African herbal medicine and across parts of Southeast Asia, where healers recognized the same thing: this plant changes your relationship with sweetness. The gymnemic acids in it temporarily block the sweet receptors on the tongue and slow glucose absorption in the gut. The result is that the craving loses some of its grip. Not all of it. Enough.

Since adding Gymnema to my protocol, I still eat chocolate after dinner. But I stop at half a piece. For someone who spent most of her life feeling like the craving was in charge, that is a meaningful shift. The formula contains 400mg of Gymnema Sylvestre extract standardized to 25% gymnemic acid. The standardization number matters because without it, you do not know what percentage of the extract is actually the active compound. Many supplements skip that specification. We did not.

A note on cravings: If you have noticed that stress makes your sugar cravings worse, the connection is biological. Cortisol signals the brain to seek fast-burning fuel. When stress is chronic, that signal never fully quiets. If this experience is familiar, the post on why our cravings are driven by blood sugar and cortisol, not willpower, explains the mechanism in detail.

What Is the Difference Between Ceylon Cinnamon and the Kind Most Supplements Use?

Most cinnamon on the market is Cassia cinnamon. It is inexpensive, widely available, and used in the majority of supplement formulas. It also contains high levels of coumarin, a compound that can accumulate in the liver at sustained doses. Small amounts of cassia cinnamon in food are not a problem. In a formula you take every morning for months, it is not the right choice.

Ceylon is true cinnamon. Lower in coumarin, higher in active cinnamaldehyde, and more effective at supporting blood sugar stability after meals. It has been central to South Asian cooking for centuries. It is in Persian rice dishes and Moroccan tagines. In Mexico, Ceylon cinnamon is called canela, and it is the authentic cinnamon used in traditional Mexican cooking long before the cheaper Cassia version flooded the market. It shows up in Caribbean stews, West African spice blends, and Arab sweets. Nearly every Brown and Black food tradition has been using this plant in its original form for generations. I use it in almost everything I cook. I wanted the formula to honor that.

The formula uses 200mg of Ceylon Cinnamon at a 10:1 extract ratio, which delivers the potency of 2 grams of raw Ceylon cinnamon per serving.

Why Is Saffron in a Metabolic Health Supplement?

This one is personal, and the choice was entirely intentional.

Saffron has been in our food for centuries. Iran is the world's largest saffron producer, and Persian cuisine has used it for thousands of years in rice dishes, stews, and tea. In South Asian kitchens, it shows up in biryani, kheer, wedding sweets, and the chai that appeared when guests arrived. Moroccan cooking uses it in tagines and couscous. Arab cuisines have relied on it for flavor and medicinal purposes. Through Moorish influence, it traveled to Spain and, from there, to parts of Latin America and the Caribbean. Saffron belongs to all of us. Our ancestors put it in everything, not only because it made things beautiful and fragrant. Saffron has documented effects on mood, emotional well-being, and craving reduction. The active compound safranal acts on serotonin pathways in the brain, which helps explain why traditional medicine used saffron for mental and emotional health long before randomized trials confirmed what it was already doing.

There is a real connection between mood dysregulation and late-night eating, between stress and the kind of craving that is not really about hunger. Saffron addresses that piece. It is in both the AM and PM capsules. 20mg in each, standardized to 0.3% safranal. A therapeutic dose, not a decorative amount.

I wanted saffron in this formula because it belongs there. It always has.

Which Vitamins Are in the AM Capsule and Why Does the Form They Come In Matter?

The vitamins I chose for the AM capsule are based on what our community is most commonly deficient in, and the specific forms are based on what the body can actually absorb and use.

Vitamin B12 — Methylcobalamin — 1 mg

B12 deficiency cuts across our communities in ways mainstream health conversations rarely acknowledge. South Asians who eat vegetarian or vegan diets are at high risk. So are many Black and African American communities, where research consistently shows elevated deficiency rates. Latinx communities, particularly those eating traditional plant-forward diets, are also disproportionately affected. And anyone following halal dietary practices may face limited access to certain fortified food sources depending on what is available where they live. The common thread across all these groups is that the mainstream supplement system was not designed with our diets, food traditions, or dietary restrictions in mind. Most supplement formulas use cyanocobalamin, the synthetic form, because it is cheaper. The body has to convert it into methylcobalamin before it can use it. Brown Body Reset uses methylcobalamin directly. Your body uses it as-is.

Chromium Picolinate — 400 mcg

Chromium supports insulin sensitivity by helping cells respond to insulin more effectively, and there is consistent research backing its ability to reduce sugar cravings through that mechanism. It is under-discussed in metabolic health conversations. It should not be.

Vitamin D3 — 2,000 IU — Plant-Based

D3 deficiency is widespread in South Asian, Middle Eastern, Black, and Brown communities. Darker skin pigmentation reduces UV absorption, and many of us spend more time indoors than the sun exposure recommendations assume. The standard response is to supplement. The standard supplement uses D3 derived from lanolin, a byproduct of sheep's wool, which is neither vegan nor halal. The D3 in Brown Body Reset comes from lichen. Plant-based. Suitable for vegetarians, vegans, and anyone following halal guidelines.

Vitamin K2 — MK-7 — 100 mcg

Most people taking D3 supplements are not taking K2 alongside it, and they should be. D3 increases calcium absorption. K2 directs calcium to bones and teeth rather than allowing it to accumulate in arteries. The two work together.

Why Did I Include Ginger When Every Brown and Black Kitchen Already Has It?

Ginger Standardized Extract — 5% Gingerols — 100 mg AM / 25 mg PM

Ginger is one of the most universal plants in Brown and Black food traditions. West African pepper soups. Caribbean ginger beer and jerk seasoning. South Asian chai and curries. Middle Eastern spice blends. East Asian traditional medicine, where it has been used for over two thousand years. Central American and Mexican cooking. It shows up everywhere because every one of these traditions independently recognized what it does: reduces inflammation, supports digestion, and helps the body regulate what it takes in. The research on insulin sensitivity is simply the clinical confirmation of what our ancestors already knew.

It is in both the AM and PM capsules, at different doses. The AM dose is larger because inflammation management is most useful during active hours. The PM dose supports digestion overnight. And the standardization to 5% gingerols matters; without it, you do not know how much of the extract is actually active. Most supplements do not specify. This one does.

What Did I Deliberately Leave Out of This Formula?

Two things I chose not to include: caffeine and green tea extract. Both are standard ingredients in supplements that rely on stimulants to drive results. Neither one is in Brown Body Reset.

I left out caffeine because many of us are already using coffee and energy drinks to push through afternoon crashes and cortisol fatigue. Adding more stimulants to that cycle does not fix the underlying problem. It delays it, making the eventual crash worse. I wanted this formula to work on the system, not paper over the symptoms.

I left out green tea extract for a different reason. It is not an Ayurvedic ingredient, and it is not part of the ancestral food medicine that I was trying to honor. As I was building this formula, I kept returning to a single question: what does medicine that comes from our tradition actually look like? Gymnema. Saffron. Ceylon cinnamon. Ginger. These are not additions I found in a Western supplement database. These are the plants our grandmothers knew. South Asian, Persian, West African, Caribbean, and Mexican grandmothers. The names they had for these plants were different. What they understood about them was not.

I wanted this formula to have a piece of home. The plants our ancestors knew. The medicine that remembered where we came from.

Why Is There a PM Capsule?

Because what happens to your body at night matters as much as what happens during the day. Cortisol is supposed to follow a curve. High in the morning to bring you online. Low by evening so your body can rest, repair, and process what happened during the day. For many of us, especially those who have carried years of chronic stress, that curve is off. Cortisol stays elevated into the evening. Blood sugar stays unstable. Sleep becomes a lighter, less restorative version of what sleep is supposed to be.

The PM capsule was built specifically for that problem.

Why Magnesium Bisglycinate Specifically, and Not Another Form?

I started using magnesium in 2022, the year I left my corporate job. I assumed leaving would fix my sleep. It did not. I had spent so many years running on cortisol and pressure that my nervous system did not know how to wind down when the reason for staying wound up was gone. I was exhausted, and I still could not sleep properly.

Magnesium was the first thing that made a real difference, but the form mattered. Magnesium oxide, which is what most drugstore supplements contain, is poorly absorbed by the body. Magnesium citrate works primarily as a digestive aid. Magnesium bisglycinate is bound to glycine, an amino acid that crosses the blood-brain barrier. That direct access to the central nervous system is what makes it effective for calming the stress response and improving sleep quality. A 2025 randomized controlled trial found that magnesium bisglycinate reduced insomnia severity within four weeks, with measurable reductions in cortisol as part of the mechanism.

The PM capsule contains 714mg of magnesium bisglycinate, which delivers 100mg of elemental magnesium per serving. That is a clinically meaningful amount, not a trace inclusion.

Why Do the PM Capsules Also Contain Berberine, L-Theanine, and Saffron?

The PM berberine is about sustained effect. Blood sugar regulation does not take the night off. Research on berberine shows that splitting the daily dose, 500mg morning and 500mg evening, produces more consistent glucose control than a single large morning dose. The total daily amount across both capsules is 1,000mg, which is the dosing used in the clinical research on berberine and metabolic health.

L-theanine at 100mg is the wind-down ingredient. It is an amino acid found naturally in green tea that promotes alpha brain wave activity, the mental state associated with calm alertness. Without the caffeine that comes with tea. It does not sedate you. It quiets the mental loop that keeps you awake when your body is tired, but your mind has not gotten the message yet.

The saffron in the PM capsule serves the same mood- and craving-reduction function as the AM dose, but in the evening. Late-night eating and emotional eating both involve stress and serotonin components. The second saffron dose addresses that.

I built the PM stack slowly over several months, adding one ingredient at a time. Magnesium first. Then L-theanine. Then the evening saffron. Before I had this protocol, I was using Advil PM to get through the night. That is not a sustainable approach, and it was not fixing anything. Now I sleep nine hours and wake up actually refreshed, not just less tired. That distinction matters.

Everything in this formula, AM and PM, is vegan and halal-compliant. The capsule shell is HPMC, plant-derived. No gelatin. No maltodextrin as a filler. No silicon dioxide. No conventional magnesium stearate. The bottle is dark amber because berberine degrades in light. The foil induction seal and desiccant pack keep moisture and air out. Every detail was chosen with intention because the person taking this deserves a formula crafted with the same care she has devoted to her own health for years.

There will be people who look at this list and wonder whether they really need all of it. Maybe they do not. But our bodies have spent years, sometimes decades, running a system that was not designed for us. Being handed advice tailored to someone else's biology, cultural history, and baseline. This formula was not adapted from a generic weight loss template. It was built from the ground up, for the body that has been told it is fine when it is not.

This is the medicine our bodies deserved all along.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does berberine actually do for weight loss?

Berberine activates an enzyme called AMPK, which controls how cells process glucose and fat. Improved AMPK activity leads to better insulin sensitivity, meaning the body is less likely to store excess glucose as fat and more likely to use it for energy. For South Asian, Black, Latina, Arab, and Middle Eastern bodies, all of which carry elevated insulin resistance risk that standard screening tools frequently miss, this mechanism is particularly relevant. Berberine is not a stimulant and does not suppress appetite through caffeine. It works on the underlying metabolic function.

What is gymnema sylvestre, and does it actually reduce sugar cravings?

Gymnema sylvestre is an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, sometimes called the "sugar destroyer." The gymnemic acids in the plant temporarily block sweet taste receptors on the tongue and slow glucose absorption in the gut. Clinical research supports its role in blood sugar management. The effect on cravings is real but not total. It does not eliminate the desire for something sweet. It makes it easier to stop at a reasonable amount rather than feeling like the craving is in control.

Why is the entire formula vegan and halal?

Because BBR was built for everybody who has been overlooked by mainstream wellness, and that includes vegetarians and vegans,  Muslims, and anyone across our communities for whom gelatin-based capsules and animal-derived ingredients are not an option. The formula is vegan and halal-compliant: no gelatin, no animal-derived ingredients, no fillers that conflict with those standards. The capsule shell is HPMC, plant-derived. The Vitamin D3 comes from lichen, not lanolin. Every ingredient choice was made with this community in mind from the beginning, not added as a feature later.

How is Brown Body Reset different from other berberine supplements?

Most berberine supplements are single-ingredient products with 95% or lower purity. Brown Body Reset uses berberine at greater than 97% purity, split into AM and PM doses for sustained effect, and pairs it with gymnema sylvestre, Ceylon cinnamon, standardized ginger, saffron, and targeted vitamins, all in forms chosen for bioavailability. The PM capsule adds magnesium bisglycinate and L-theanine to address cortisol rhythm and sleep quality, which most metabolic formulas do not touch. The formula was designed specifically around the biology and cultural context of South Asian, Black, Middle Eastern, and Brown bodies, not adapted from a generic template.

Does Brown Body Reset contain caffeine or stimulants?

No. Brown Body Reset contains no caffeine, no green tea extract, and no stimulants. The formula is designed to improve metabolic function and cortisol regulation at the system level, not to mask fatigue with stimulants. If you are already caffeinating to get through the afternoon, adding more caffeine in a capsule is not a solution. It is a delay.

Why does the PM capsule also contain berberine if the AM capsule already has it?

Blood sugar regulation does not pause at night. Research on berberine shows that split dosing, 500mg in the morning and 500mg in the evening, produces more consistent glucose control than a single large morning dose. The PM formula applies that principle by pairing evening berberine with magnesium bisglycinate, L-theanine, and saffron to support both metabolic function and overnight recovery simultaneously.

P.S. Nothing in here was chosen by accident.
